DentaQuest Data Breach Hits 15 Million: What Was Exposed

DentaQuest is notifying 15 million+ people after a breach exposed names, addresses, SSNs, and Medicaid/Medicare numbers. Here's how to limit the damage.

A dental plan became a 15-million-person identity leak

DentaQuest — the second-largest dental benefits administrator in the United States — is notifying more than 15 million people that their data was taken in a cyberattack. One independent researcher estimates the true number may exceed 23 million.

This wasn't limited to dental records. The exposed information reportedly includes:

  • Names and home addresses
  • Social Security numbers
  • Member IDs, Medicaid and Medicare numbers
  • Dental and vision health details (diagnosis, treatment, billing)

The uncomfortable truth about your data

You almost certainly didn't choose DentaQuest. You may not even remember having the coverage. That's the modern privacy problem: you didn't select most of the companies holding your identity. A plan administrator, a billing vendor, a contractor three steps removed — each one is a copy of you, and any single one can be the leak.

An SSN you can't un-send. But a leaked record only becomes a real-world problem when it's combined with your current address and phone — and that part you can control.

What you can do now

  • Assume your SSN is out there and treat it that way: consider a credit freeze with all three bureaus (it's free).
  • Shrink what's still resellable. Your address and phone are what turn a leaked database into targeted fraud. Get them off people-search sites.
  • Monitor going forward. Removal isn't permanent unless someone keeps the listings down.
